Coming Home Alone by Lori Triplett
Last week Lori Triplett released the four song EP ‘Coming Home Alone‘. The EP is beautiful yet somber as it takes on not only classic holiday themes but also being single during the holidays. However, as for as holiday music goes the atmosphere, while melancholy, is calming and overall lovely. The minimalistic musical arrangement is the perfect setting for Triplett’s warm and gentle vocals to take center stage. I probably spent more time listening to this EP than any other music I’ve listened to this year!
The title track, ‘Coming Home Alone‘, is about a relationship that has ended right before the holidays and wrestling with telling family and friends that it will just be you this year. Next up is the classic, ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas‘. The arrangement chosen for this classic song works well with the EP. Not only does it hold that somber tone but also retains the songs original magic. The third song, ‘River‘, is a cover of the Joni Mitchell song. ‘River’ ties in thematically with Triplett’s own original ‘Coming Home Alone’ and is a beautiful rendition that does the original justice! The last song is yet another original by Triplett called, ‘All the Good Men‘, which is about having hope even when things may seem bleak. Here’s what Triplett had to say about ‘Coming Home Alone‘:
I wanted to create something that felt very real and vulnerable; something that wasn’t the perfectly polished recordings like we’ve all grown accustomed to hearing. I wanted it to be more genuine and not over-produced, so my producer, Chad Carouthers, and I recorded everything in 3 days and didn’t agonize over every little detail like you usually tend to do in the studio. We kept the first or second vocal pass I sang on each track to ensure we didn’t overthink anything and that it kept the rawness and authenticity we wanted to capture.
I have to say they managed to accomplish that brilliantly! ‘Coming Home Alone‘ is vulnerable, tender and heartfelt. Not only does the EP have a nice balance of new and familiar songs but it also is an album everyone will love. Whether alone or together with loved ones ‘Coming Home Alone‘ is certainly a holiday album you’ll want to listen to.
