Proto Retro by Dot Dash is twelve tracks of punk power pop jangle. We’re talking upbeat, bright, catchy and fun to dance and sing along to. Now, let’s forget all of the labels for a second. You can call it what you will, add all the sub genre’s you want, break out your music degrees etc. but at the end of the day all that matters is that Proto Retro is damn good music.
Sure it’s got roots in a multitude of genres. Newsflash, all music does. At the end of the day it lays down roots in your soul and that’s the epitome of good music. All the flash in the world won’t reach an audience if you can’t reach their soul. This band, right here, knows how to do just that.
The lyrics are often whimsical yet straight forward like this first verse of ‘Dead Letter Rays‘
“It was a bad hand right from the start / A bent joker and the Queen of Hearts / It wasn’t on the cards / Or written in the stars”.
