I recently found the new album ‘Misfit Children‘ by the duo known as, I-Taki Maki, while searching for new music. This nine track alternative rock, post punk, album takes a minimalist approach to its soundscape which adds more weight to the context of the message all while bringing something unique to the table. The music has plenty of space which create a heavy and slow floating to match the weightiness of the lyrics. The vocals float just above this heavy and slow dreamscape, drifting in harmony while urging the listener to pay attention. Here’s a snippet about ‘Misfit Children‘ from the bands page:
The album is made up of nine songs, rooted in the theme of growing up psychologically healthy, and of the complexity of being a child nowadays. One day children will be full-grown humans, and as all humans do, they’ll probably have to deal with failure.
That is certainly an interesting approach! We hear a lot about childhood trauma and all that encompasses it but not much about the people who may have a psychologically healthy childhood but are perhaps are not prepared for adulthood and failure. Being a child in today’s world is certainly complex and the transition into adulthood can leave many feeling lost and unprepared. These are also things we should talk about and try to do better with as a civilization. ‘Misfit Children‘ is an album that makes you think and gets the conversation started.
