‘This Old Thing’ is about resurrection, trying in the midst of loss to save something precious: a relationship, a dream, or faith. For me, it’s also about a return to my more emotional songwriting roots. A decade ago, I fell completely in love with pop music and writing slick, upbeat songs. I felt the need to provide a fun escape from the heaviness of life. But in the process, I shied away from being more open and genuine and from expressing uncomfortable feelings or pain. Recently, I’ve been feeling more reflective and have reconnected with the emotional side of myself as an artist.
