Howlite recently released the single, ‘Canary‘ which deals with the realization of adopting traits in order to fit in and having to go on a journey of self discovery to find out who you truly are. ‘Canary‘ eloquently expresses this through poignant and compelling lyrics. The warm vocals hold an aire of sadness while at the same time expressing emptiness. The atmosphere is light and airy adding to the emptiness of self which is expressed in the lyrics. Here’s what Howlite had to say about ‘Canary‘:
“I wrote this song several years ago during my early twenties, when I was going through a period of huge change and discovering essentially who I was,” says Alison Thom.
“ It was the start of the terrifying process of looking at yourself and realising the habits and traits you have adopted to fit in or to connect with others, and realising that you don’t actually know who you are underneath them; finding yourself in this cage you created and trying to work out how to get out, and what you will be once you’re free.”
That’s certainly something we can all relate to. Our school years tend to place us in the conforming mindset. It’s easy to see how as we grow out of that stage of life we’re left with a false sense of self. ‘Canary‘ really gives life to the struggle and emotions many people feel.
