Counting Sheep by MELÓ
At the end of January, MELÓ, released the single, ‘Counting Sheep‘. The song is an inner dialogue that questions the experiences that have led to certain points in life. The questions that keep us up at night, the answers that will go unanswered, all of which lead to the idiom, Counting Sheep. The minimalistic music arrangement is a soothing contrast to the lyrical weight. MELÓ’s soft and emotive vocals are bouncy and float gently among the delicate guitar. ‘Counting Sheep‘ has an atmosphere that perfectly simulates those late nights when the rest of the world is asleep but your mind is keeping you awake. It’s peaceful, quite, somewhat freeing, yet filled with an energy that refuses to rest. I really love the way this song came out! There’s just so many layers, we’ve all been there. An ode to my beginnings as a songwriter, my single “Counting Sheep” reflects on the acoustic, a capella and folk roots of my past. Fascinated by the storytelling aspects of these genres, I began using them as an outlet for my emotions. Part of my future EP “Youthless,” this song is the first in a multitude of singles focused on the exploration of genre-fluid music and conceptualization of the issues that come with growing up too quickly. Discussing the different facets of coping through mental illness, with the underlying desire to go back to a simpler, care-free time.
I’ve been told that I have distinctive vocals, sometimes compared to the likes of Hayley Williams. There is a type of angst and darkness in my voice, that compliments the darker themes in the lyrical content. I try to create a space where both the listener and I can feel comfortable with our vulnerability.
First, this is why music is vital. In a world that wants us to conform, we need to know things aren’t as black and white as the world would have us believe. Despite how often we as a society speak of gender fluidity and other topics that don’t conform, so many still feel alone and misunderstood. Music connects us with a more realistic viewpoint, with others who are like us. I’m always so happy to see more and more musicians shine a light and show more people they aren’t alone.
‘Counting Sheep‘ does that on many levels. Many people have the same feelings, and are trouble by life’s hardships, regardless of how we are labeled. It’s an experience in which we will all go through and thus can all come together and realize we are more similar than our differences. We all have human experiences. Okay I digress, however, I love ‘Counting Sheep‘. It’s a gentle and calming song that’s easily relatable. I look forward to hearing the ‘Youthless‘ EP when it releases.
