On Our Own by Kar
The indie pop trio, Kar, just released their latest single, ‘On Our Own‘, which is a haunting song about how our relationships impact our lives in both positive and negative ways. Personally, I find the song to have the dualistic meanings of, a couple facing life together (on their own) as well as, one person having the revelation that things don’t always work out and in the end they kind of accept the fact that, whether in a relationship or not, they are on their own. I’m sure that wasn’t the bands intended meaning, however, it is a wonderful thing when a song can take on more meanings than originally intended. By being written in such a way, it can reach more people.
For instance, take a song like ‘Every Breath You Take‘ by The Police, which people used in their weddings. Many people found beauty in a song that was intended to be about stalking. P. Diddy even remixed it to pay homage to a passed on loved one, rapper Notorious B.I.G.. Likewise, ‘On Our Own‘ has that same affect of being able to take on more than one meaning. When I hear the harmonies between the two vocals it sounds both like unity as well as two separate entities mirroring each other. It’s hard to explain yet there’s a beautiful emergence of melancholic play between the two. This is a band you should keep an eye out for and the song is a must have!
